Is Lambswool Itchy? The Honest Answer (and How to Pick a Soft One)

Quick answer: Most people don't find good lambswool itchy. Itch comes from coarse fibres, thicker than about 30 microns, pressing on the skin. It is not a wool allergy. Fine lambswool sits well below that line, so it feels soft. If your skin is very sensitive, choose cashmere or superfine merino instead.
Why does some wool itch?
The prickle you feel from a scratchy jumper is mechanical. Fibre ends that are thick and stiff don't bend when they touch your skin, so they poke it and set off the nerves that feel itch. Dermatologists who reviewed a century of research put the threshold at around 30 to 32 microns. Fibres finer than that bend out of the way instead.
That's why the fibre's width matters far more than whether it's wool. A coarse polyester or nylon can prickle just as much as coarse wool.
Can you be allergic to wool?
True wool allergy is very rare. The same review, published in Acta Dermato-Venereologica, found no credible evidence that wool is an allergen. What people call a "wool allergy" is almost always the prickle from coarse fibres. If you do react to everything you try, speak to a pharmacist or GP. For most people, finer fibres solve the problem.
How fine is lambswool?
Lambswool comes from a lamb's first shearing, so its fibres still have their natural tapered tips. That makes it softer than wool from adult sheep of the same breed. Its width depends on the breed, usually somewhere between about 16.5 and 27 microns. Good lambswool is comfortably below the 30-micron itch line, but the softest is at the lower end of that range.
| Fibre | Typical width | Itch risk for most people |
|---|---|---|
| Cashmere | About 14 to 19 microns | Very low |
| Superfine merino | Under 18.5 microns | Very low |
| Lambswool | About 16.5 to 27 microns | Low, varies by scarf |
| Ordinary sheep's wool | Often 30 microns or more | Higher |
Five ways to tell if a scarf will feel soft
- Read the composition. "100% lambswool", "merino" or "cashmere" is a good sign. Vague words like "wool blend" can hide coarser fibres.
- Look for fineness words. Superfine or extra-fine merino, baby cashmere, and lambswool all point to finer fibres.
- Check the weight. A light, airy scarf usually feels softer on the neck than a dense, heavy one made from the same fibre.
- Test on your neck, not your hand. Your neck and the inside of your wrist are far more sensitive than your fingertips.
- Buy where returns are easy. If it doesn't feel right, you should be able to send it back.
Is lambswool OK for sensitive skin or eczema?
Many people with sensitive skin wear fine wool happily. Research summarised by Woolmark found that superfine merino is well tolerated by people with eczema. If your skin is very reactive, start with cashmere or superfine merino. Wear it over a collar for the first few days and see how you feel.
How to make a wool scarf feel softer
- Hand wash it in cool water with a wool wash. Some people add a little hair conditioner to the rinse.
- Never use hot water or a tumble dryer, as heat makes fibres stiff and felted.
- Dry it flat. Our step-by-step washing guide covers the details.

Frequently asked questions
Is lambswool softer than regular wool?
Yes. Lambswool comes from a lamb's first shearing, so the fibres keep their soft natural tips. It's usually finer and softer than wool from adult sheep of the same breed.
Is lambswool itchier than merino?
It can be slightly. Merino is graded by fineness, so superfine merino is reliably soft. Lambswool varies more by breed, but good lambswool is still well below the point where most people feel itch.
Can you be allergic to wool?
It's very rare. A review of over 100 years of research found no credible evidence that wool is an allergen. The itch most people feel comes from coarse fibres, not an allergy.
Does lambswool get softer over time?
A little. Gentle hand washing in cool water and drying flat help keep it soft. Heat and tumble drying make wool stiffer, so avoid them.
